Default Using 301 redirect for domain transfers

I am transferring my domain from the old website to the new. I spoke to an SEO friend of mine who advised me against transferring the site without first creating redirects. I was thinking whether I could create a page with a redirect header? I believe it would keep the old pages active on the search engines. But if I fail to do it, how long do I have before these pages disappear. Would this affect the SEO process? Is this a good idea, if I am not a very highly ranking site?

Please help me out.
